ANIME – Nichola Lovell
Congratulations to Nichola Lovell on being a finalist for the AHFA Newcomer of the Year Award. The following is a an abstract about her collection, biography and her reaction of the announcement.
“She was super excited and couldn’t believe it when she heard her name, so she had to wait to watch it again, but then saw her name being tagged by other people on the live feed.

Honestly didn’t think she had a chance especially when she heard the other names being called, and feels so happy to be in such a high calibre of hairdressers

That all her hard work had paid off, and she was still in shock about becoming a finalist.

Really can’t believe that she made it as a finalist – but is super happy to be part of it.” – Felicity on Nichola Lovell

Anime (Japanese term for hand-drawn or computer animation)

Nichola’s love of all things Japan is the inspiration behind her latest colour collection, aptly titled, ‘Anime’.

Growing up Nichola had a love and fascination for Japanese pop-culture and was captured by this unique style of animation.

For her collection, Nichola found inspiration in some of her favorite Anime productions, and drew on her appreciation of characters from Sailor Moon, One Punch Man, Inuyasha and One Piece.

Reflecting on these characters inspired Nichola to develop the bold colour palates and disconnected styles introduced in her collection. The use of hair colours such as yellow, pink and green are very popular in Anime.

Nichola used various shades of these same colours to create texture and give the illusion of light hitting the hair, just like they would when drawing Anime characters. Multiple textures were used to create intricate details within the hair creating different focal points that show off pockets of hidden colour. Each style had an editorial, windswept look to portray movement and the Anime influences in the hair.

Nichola’s love off all things Japan extended into her styling clothes choice to complement the hair. Using a monochrome colour palette, Nichola found inspiration from high end Japanese clothing labels with subtle hints of Harujuku street style vibes, she created an high end modern edgy Japanese clothing style reflecting am anime reference.

Nichola’s vision has created a youthful, playful look which fuses a popular Japanese sub-culture with urban Melbourne living.

BIOGRAPHY – Nichola Louise Lovell, 25 Originally from Perth, Nichola decided small city life was not for her. At age 21 she packed her bags and moved to Melbourne to study at RMIT.

Her studies, initially in Accounting and later Building Construction, left her uninspired. It was not until becoming friends with a hairdresser that she realised this was where her passion lay.

Leaving the university life behind, Nichola pursued her passion for hair and within a short time received several offers before accepting an apprenticeship opportunity with TONI&GUY in Brighton, Melbourne.

Nichola quickly threw herself into her craft. Her passion and commitment saw her complete her hairdressing apprenticeship and colour vardering in an impressive two and a half years, significantly quicker than the usual completion time.

Since qualifying in late 2016, Nichola has worked tirelessly to build and establish herself as a professional and contemporary hair colourist and educator. Nichola has spent many hours training and developing junior staff from both the Brighton and Port Melbourne TONI&GUY salons.

Nichola’s dedication to her craft is demonstrated by her willingness to participate in both inter-state and local training and development events, even at her own expense and time.

Most recently, Nichola travelled to Sydney twice in the same weekend to help colour and style the new TONI&GUY collection, Future Wise – all the while still ensuring she was in store to service her Saturday clients!

Her commitment to her profession was recently recognized when, after only 12 months as a qualified colourist, Nichola was promoted to Senior Technician. For those who know her, both clients and staff, Nichola is a talented professional who is exceptionally devoted and passionate about her work.

She is a great ambassador for the TONI&GUY brand, and the hairdressing industry as a whole.
