TONI&GUY St Kilda has experienced a new beginning with Melvin Tay taking over management of this uber cool salon. Hailing from Singapore, Melvin worked with TONI&GUY in St Kilda before deciding that he would call St Kilda home.
Melvin has been busy re-energising the salon that is a stylish temple to dedicated image-makers in St Kilda. Tapping into the young, artistic and fashionable feel of the clientele, the salon has commissioned Lady Poise, a dynamic graffiti artist to personally create artwork for the salon, giving it a more artistic, street vibe.

My career with TONI&GUY spans 9 years so far with 4 of those spent in Australia. I arrived from Singapore to explore Australia and ended up purchasing the St Kilda salon in June 2008. The last 3 years have been the most exciting time in my career, learning to manage my own team of fantastic hairdressers and managing the business side of a salon.
TONI&GUY are experts in training and education and this is the major reason I decided to work with them both in Singapore and Australia. I have had years of training which has benefited me in my career by keeping me informed of new techniques and trends that I can pass onto my team and to clients. We are a big family at TONI&GUY and there is a strong sense of camaraderie which inspires us everyday.
As a hairdresser, my passion is cutting and I love short funky hairstyles especially on women. I really think females with short hair are quite unique and very cool - they have a very individual style. As well I am experienced in mens barbering.
I'm always looking at new trends to excite our customers with. Right now texture is huge and I am enjoying using different texturising techniques and layers of products to create to enhance the haircut.
My hair icon is the french actress Audrey Tatou. She has great curly hair and is always changing her look from short to mid-length and always looks on trend.
I love playing with styling products and layering to achieve varying textures and give clients the look they desire. This is my secret and I'm happy to share with clients who visit our St Kilda salon.

I have always loved the concept of colour and being a technician at TONI&GUY offers me the opportunity to experiment with some fantastic techniques which we receive from around the world. Our education is second to none. We are so lucky to be provided with endless and inspiring seminars, courses and workshops which impart the knowledge and skills that we can pass onto our clients and give them great hair and amazing service.
I've been a colourist for 6 years and I love playing with vibrant colours that make a statement. At the moment copper is my favourite colour - subtle or bright it is a great tone to give hair warmth in winter and vibrant highlights in summer.
I am inspired by Drew Barrymore when it comes to hair colour and style. I think she perfects the grunge look whilst keeping things perfectly polished. She is a true hair chameleon.
I believe that hair has to be in top condition before any chemical services are applied - especially colour. I am loving Wella SP's new alchemy treatments. It repairs damaged hair, strengthens and provides protection from heat styling.

I have been hairdressing for twelve years and love this industry. Working at TONI&GUY provides so many opportunities. As a global company we still offer the same excellence of hairdressing wherever you go around the world. It's so unique like that. Most of my clients know me for my voluminous, textured blow waves – they’re my specialty!
I love how hair trends come and go as it gives us hairdressers the opportunity to experiment. At the moment my favorite trend is the short Bettie Page inspired fringes - a great way to freshen up your current look.
My favourite hair idol is Lady Gaga - you can't go wrong with picking her - she is never dull or looks the same way twice. She is a force to be reckoned with!
My secret weapon is label.m gel for styling. A fantastic blowdrying product - it's definitely making a come back.

I've been hairdressing for 6 years and love the atmosphere and people I work with at TONI&GUY. Most importantly, the company provides so much in terms of training and I love this about them. They're always coming up with new trends and hair looks which we can adapt in the salon and keep us excited about all things hair!
I love working with colour - especially gold and warm honey tones which look beautiful in blonde hair. They give hair a great lift and shine which can really make a difference to your total look.
Erin Wasson is my hair crush at the moment. I love her effortless colour and style - it looks like she's been at the beach all day, but she could put a gown on and still look amazing! As a contrast, I love Agyness Deyn's short cropped cuts. Whether she is blonde or brunette, she always turns head.
My favourite label.m product is the curl cream. It gives curly hair soft control and it's also great when you want to blow wave the hair straight. It leaves the hair feeling amazing!
